Concert at Vanderbilt University with the Blair String Quartet on March 22

  Signature Series Blair String Quartet Christian Teal and Cornelia Heard, violins John Kochanowski, viola Felix Wang, cello with Melvin Chen, piano   The Blair String Quartet perform its final concert at the Blair School of Music with Christian Teal in the first violin chair. After forty-one years in the Blair String Quartet, Teal is retiring at the end of this season. This valedictory concert will feature the monumental Quartet in B flat Major, Op. 130 by Ludwig van Beethoven with the original last movement, the Grosse Fuge (Great Fugue). Performing with the Blair Quartet for this concert is pianist Melvin Chen, a former precollege violin student of Teal’s who is now deputy dean of the Yale School of Music. Beethoven concerto with the Yale Philharmonia

The Horowitz Piano Series at the Yale School of Music presents an evening of Beethoven concerti performed by faculty pianists Wei-Yi Yang, Hung-Kuan Chen,and Melvin Chen on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 8 pm. The concert will also feature the Yale Philharmonia, conducted by Shinik Hahm. The concert is part of the Beethoven Concerto Project, an inter-series effort to perform the complete cycle of Beethoven’s concertos for piano and orchestra over four concerts in the 2013-14 season. On September 20, the project began with Boris Berman’s performance of the Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major. This concert will feature pianist Wei-Yi Yangperforming the Concerto No. 1 in C major, pianist Hung-Kuan Chen performing Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, and pianist Melvin Chen performing Beethoven’s piano arrangement of the Violin Concerto, Op. 61a. In order to complete the cycle, Peter Frankl will join the Philharmonia on January 24 to perform the Concerto No. 4 in G major. The last performance will be April 4, when Yale School of Music Dean Robert Blocker will perform the Concerto No. 3 in C minor with the Yale Philharmonia.
